Louisiana prisoner with COVID-19 dies; reopen debate flares

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A 69-year-old prisoner at the Louisiana State Penitentiary has died after being hospitalized with COVID-19. State officials announced the death of the man Monday. He was the first state prisoner known to have died with the disease. The man was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder when he died Saturday. Corrections officials say he had an underlying health condition.  Last week, the corrections department said an employee at the prison died with the disease. The coronavirus death toll in Louisiana was 1,328 as of midday Monday. The number hospitalized remained under 1,800, having peaked at well over 2,000 more than a week ago.
